Ear Correction:
Most frequently asked questions
Is otoplasty for me?
People choose otoplasty when they have protruding ears. In many cases
protruding ears lack the natural contours and folds. Often one ear may
be larger, higher, or more projected than the other. Although it is not
possible to obtain absolute symmetry with surgery, a very reasonable degree
of improvement can be expected.
Your new ears will not necessarily change your self image or cause other
people to treat you differently.
Are there age limits?
The ears are fully developed by the mid-teens. At any age after that you
may choose to enhance your appearance and increase your self-confidence.
Are there any risks?
There are inherent risks with otoplasty as there are with any surgery.
However, when an otoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon,
complications are rare and usually minor. The complications that may occur
are a reaction to the anaesthesia, infection or bleeding. However, if
you follow the advise from your surgeon you will reduce these risks.
What is your surgeons' experience?
All Continental Medical Services Ltd's surgeons are fully registered with
the General Medical Council and are NHS trained and approved. They operate
in fully registered private hospitals. Their qualifications can be viewed
on request at consultation.
What will happen the day of the procedure?
On arrival at the hospital you will be admitted by the receptionist and
routine medical checks, such as your temperature and blood pressure are
carried out. You will then change into our gown and remove any cosmetics,
jewellery, glasses or contact lenses before meeting the surgeon. The procedure
is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, however a sedation or
general anaesthetic can be given if the patient prefers it.
Is there any pain after the surgery?
There is usually little pain associated with otoplasty, most patients
report just a slight discomfort.
You may have to continue to wear a headband at night to keep your ears
flat for a few weeks. It takes approximately three weeks before the ears
lose their redness, swelling and numbness. Follow-up appointments will
be made to ensure the incisions are healing properly.
Is the initial consultation free?
